First minimum wage hike in Minneapolis goes into effect

Every little bit helps. Alex Wittenberg at the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reports Sunday is the day for the first minimum wage hike in Minneapolis: "The first minimum wage hike for Minneapolis small businesses will take effect on Sunday, as part of the city's plan to reach a $15 minimum by 2024 and 2022 for small and large companies, respectively. The minimum wage for companies with 100 or fewer employees will increase to $10.25 an hour on Sunday; for companies with more than 100 employees, minimum wages will increase to $11.25 an hour."

The one-percenters. WCCO-TV shares MPD police union president Lt. Bob Kroll's Facebook comments following the killing of Thurman Blevins and others shot recently in Minneapolis: “'Less than one in every 100 people killed in this city is by police. And that’s all this community and politicians care about is the less than 1%,' Kroll said.”

Undecided's got a shot. Libertarian site Outstate.us partnered with a national polling firm to gauge Minnesotans thoughts on the U.S. Senate and Minnesota Governor races: "Question 9: The candidates in the August 14th Republican Primary Election for Governor are Tim Pawlenty, Matt Kruse and Jeff Johnson. If the election were held today, for whom would you vote? Tim Pawlenty: 54%, Matt Kruse: 3%, Jeff Johnson: 20%, Undecided: 23%"

Goal. Mike Mullen at City Pages has a piece on Minnesota United's Collin Martin coming out as gay: "'I have received only kindness and acceptance from everyone in Major League soccer,' Martin writes, 'and that has made the decision to come out publicly that much easier.' Martin becomes just the second active MLS player to compete while out as a gay man."

Soggy sales. CBS News quotes a General Mills exec on America's growing disinterest in breakfast cereal: "'There still is a battle every day for what's going to be eaten at breakfast. Everyone's got a ton of choices,' said Scott Baldwin, General Mills marketing and business unit director for cereal. He said the company is changing recipes and manufacturing to address current food concerns. He points out that Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios, the most popular cereal in the United States, are both now gluten free."
