COURTS: Former Telstra technician Bradley Robert Edwards begins WA's "trial of the century", fighting accusations he's the Claremont serial killer who terrified Perth more than 20 years ago. He's charged with the murders of Sarah Spiers, 18, Jane Rimmer, 23, and Ciara Glennon, 27, who all vanished from the affluent suburb's entertainment strip in 1996 and 1997. Prosecutors rely largely on DNA and fibre evidence. At the final pre-trial hearing, the now-51-year-old pleads guilty to five unrelated charges stemming from an attack on an 18-year-old woman in her bed in Huntingdale in 1988, and the abduction and double rape of a 17-year-old girl at Karrakatta cemetery in 1995. Both victims, now in their 40s, give harrowing evidence, along with his first and second wives, his love rival, Telstra workers and former friends. The judge-alone trial will continue well into the new year.
